Vivek Kundra Given Command of Multiple Governing Computer Systems
Vivek Kundra sees clouds in a different way than most people. As Federal CIO, he endorses some ‘cloud computing’ projects, as he trusts they may better data sharing among Federal, state and local administrations. As the former CTO for the District of Columbia, Vivek Kundra views cloud computing as a substantial opportunity for renovating intergovernmental Information Technology relationships.
Vivek Kundra works to ensure other Chief Information Officers of Federal government sectors have agendas that promote open government while fostering the innovative use of IT. His want is to embrace technological advances to promote efficient government procedures while making economical use of taxpayer money. He has acquired recognition for his leadership in public safety communications, as well as cyber security and IT portfolio management. His know how includes technology and public policy experience in the private sector and academia.
Born in Delhi, India, Vivek Kundra came to Gaithersburg, Maryland when he was eleven years of age. His college years saw him going to the University of Maryland. Upon majoring in Psychology and earning his Masters from Maryland in Information Technology, he proceeded to hold different positions. He held several leadership positions in the private sector and did consulting work with SAIC. He also served as Information Technology Director for Arlington County, Virginia and Assistant Secretary of Trade and Commerce in Governor Tim Kaine’s cabinet.
It seems as though for Vivek Kundra, the time is now for applying innovative IT initiatives. His desire is to disseminate more information to the public and to facilitate efficient communication between government offices. He is leading a Federal government technology strategy that is employing cloud computing, open source, and other ways to help the Federal government achieve its challenging Web 2.0 goals.
