A Guide to Breast Implants

For many years, thousands of women choose breast implants to help increase their self confidence or reconstruct their breasts. The most general explanation for why women are choosing implants is to enhance their appearnce; they way they look is not acceptable to them.

Technology has greatly improved since the creation of the first silicone implant back in 1962. They are now much safer and look more natural than they ever have before. The FDA finally approved the use of silicone gel implants on November 17, 2006 after many years of research that had been performed on their safety.

In 2005 the average national surgeon fee cost was $3,406. The cost increases to between $5000 and $7,000 with the addition of the facility used and anesthesia. The average cost of saline breast implants is $3,593 and $4,055 for silicone.

There are several types and techniques that are commly used for breast implants, so surgery is going to be different for each patient. Anesthesia is used for all breast implant procedures and sometimes there is a case where anesthesia is need in a particular area. The breast implant procedure is completed as an outpatient procedure or done in a hospital as an inpatient surgery. The entire surgery lasts between 1 and 2 hours.

The procedure for breasts implants is very straightforward. A surgeon like Dr Alan Kingdon will make the proper incision of the placement, align and place the implant in the desired location and then stitch the incision back together. There are some things that can vary and will determine both the results and success of the procedure: the type of the implant used, the location of the incision and the actual placement of the new breast.

All breast implants that are used today consist of a silicone shell with either a silicone or saline filing. Using implants filled with silicone was banned by the FDA in 1992 until further research could be completed. However, implants that are silicone-gel filled can still be used to reconstruct a breast or to replace silicone implants that a women has already had placed. This type of implant is also included in the study of the FDA and still available for use by those women who are willing to participate in the study.
